Salisbury Cathedral – North Cloister project
A major renovation project of Salisbury Cathedral’s cloisters is underway starting in the North Cloisters. The work, which is expected to last around five years, comes after almost 40 years of work to the external sections of the building were completed in September 2023. There was a need to communicate to visitors the nature of the work going on and also show some of the stonework that would be hidden behind hoardings. We created a scheme that involved photographing all the Salisbury stonemasons, using cut-outs of them life size, with accompanying quotations and their personal ‘makers marks’ explaining the nature of their work and how they feel about it. It was an opportunity to not only get across the ‘living’ nature of the building, but make it relevant to and cover themes of time, climate change, personal stories and craftsmanship. Colours reflect the existing stonework and illustrations go into the detail and intricacy of the carving. Content developed with Maria Blyzinsky from The Exhibitions Team.
